Advertising and the Mind of the Consumer: What Works, What Doesn't and Why (The Allen & Unwin Business and Management)
Published in Paperback by Allen & Unwin (July, 1994)
Author: Max Sutherland
Average review score:

Advertising a mystery no more!
You won't find any glitz or glamour in this book, just very intelligent writing about why advertising really works - and how to create advertising that works.

The wonderful part about this book is that it provides you with the key measures you need to use in seeing whether or not your advertising is/has worked. When clients want to justify their budgets, agencies can now help them do this by translating the results of their creative work into hard numbers.

For anyone serious about knowing how to create great advertising, this is a must read.

Breakthrough thinking
I have been consulting in the advertising business and have taught
graduate level advertising courses for over 20 years. I have never found a book that brought so much insight to the advertising issues associated with effective selling. I highly recommend this book to all.

Well Written and Full of insights
The book dissects the advertising process and analyzes the different elements that make up the ad.

Backed by years of tracking TV commercials down under, Max Sutherland has first-hand knowledge of what qualities make an ad work and what others make no or a negative difference in the ad's effectiveness.

The book commences with an introduction to advertsing's facts of life and a clarification of what is substantial and what is not in the public's perception of the industry.

It ends with a couple of interesting chapters that introduce the reader to the basic concepts of ad-effectiveness research. All in all, a good and solid book.

It does, however, use brand examples throughout that are known only to Australian readers and primarily discusses broadcast advertising.

Where Peachtree meets Sweet Auburn : the saga of two families and the making of Atlanta
Published in Unknown Binding by Scribner ()
Author: Gary Pomerantz
Average review score:

Tapestry of Lives
I knew Atlanta in quite a different way. This book has opened my eyes to how the city became what it is today and gave me a wonderful historically accurate picture of the people who build the city. This should be a must-read for anybody connected with the city or anybody interested in how race relations affect the building of any city. I was thrilled when I recently drove thru Atlanta and saw an exit off of interstate 75 south for the "John Wesley Dobbs Ave." and felt like I was part of history too after connecting some things in my family with events in this beautifully written book. This book also gives me hope that all human beings can strive together to make the future of Atlanta even greater than the past. This book was good on so many levels and touched so many different issues: Historic, human, socioeconomics, I can't begin to describe how much I liked it with the poor words at my disposal. I can say READ IT!

This author has true perception few could imitate.
Through words and comprehensions that push towards brilliance, Gary Pomerantz has written a history of civil rights in the South beyond compare to others of our generation. Every sentence shows his devotion and study of the subject, which is still unfolding as I write, on Peachtree Street. His years of interviewing and researching are evident on every single page of the thick text. This is the kind of book that you re-read the last few pages several times because you are sad to see the story end. You hope to find out the author has written a sequel! This book is for those of us wanting to learn more about the fall-out from slavery and black oppression in the South. It is the best comparison of blacks and whites ever written that truly speaks from both sides and gives the "human condition" of this subject its best reward - which is to explain the true story of where the individual's predjudices came from and how they were daily being conquered...or handed down, as the case may be. It is an essay on the evolution of a culture and it's victims. It does not always give credit to those the media attempted to credit. It gives credit to the deserving ones...politically correct or not. Some of Pomerantz's book re-writes history. You should read it.

Pomerantz captures the history and traditions of old Atlanta
I loved this book! I am an avid reader of southern history and eagerly awaited the publish date.It did not let me down. Gary Pomerantz breathes life into John Wesley Dobbs and Ivan Allen and their families. When I ran down Auburn Avenue with a group of friends last year I felt as if I had been there before. The book is more than a history of Atlanta, it is an in depth look at the people who have made this city what it is today. Mr. Pomerantz is a writer and story teller of amazing insight. The book reads like a great work of fiction. This is a must for any southern history fan or anyone loving a good read about Atlanta.

Allen & Mike's Really Cool Backcountry Ski Book
Published in Digital by Falcon Publishing ()
Authors: Allen O'Bannon and Mike Clelland
Average review score:

Cool book on cool weather camping
Well, I just panned a different book and said don't waste your money so now its time to even the score.

This book is great fun. I have lots of winter camping books and do a fair amount of winter camping. Other books may have more information, but none covers all of the basics with as much humor as this one. I do alpine skiing and snowshoeing so the coverage of tele skiing wasn't of particular interest...but I still really enjoyed reading those sections, too.

It is hard to describe the authors' irreverent approach while dealing with serious (life and death) topics, but they somehow pull it off. This is really a great book to engage someone who isn't already a hard-core winter camper...so if you are, buy it for your significant other (assuming you haven't been able to get them enthused about spending a winter weekend outdoors.) If they don't enjoy this book, you may officially give up on them.

A Great Source of Backcountry Wisdom
This book combines some great humor and excellent line drawings with some great wilderness and backcountry wisdom. All the tips and tricks one picks up over the years are in this book and it is highly recommended reading for newcomers and those already involved.

get it & get it
it is awesome! these guys are nols instructors. one guy provides the incredibly helpful commentary while the other guy provides the humorous illustrations. you will be howling with laughter as you read this great book. my bet is that humor/laughter aids the memorization process. that is key in this case because there are some truly essential tips in this book! not to be without! can't wait to wintercamp this year. they also have a telemark tips book which is very good too...

Charlie Parker Played Be Bop
Published in Paperback by Live Oak Media (September, 2000)
Authors: Chris Raschka and Richard Allen
Average review score:

My musical 2 year old loves it!
I saw this book on "Between the Lions" and I loved it, so I bought it. I figured my daughter (then about 18 months) wouldn't have any interest, but I'd keep it until she got older. Boy, was I wrong. She loves it. She loves looking at it by herself and she loves us to read it to her. I'm not a major jazz fan, but the book is impossible to read without feeling the rhythm. The illustrations are fun and the cat looks just like ours!

First book my son read and read and read...
Picked this book up at the Library after it was featured on PBS's Between The Lions. My son never put the book down, so we bought it. The book is fun, easy to read for children, and the pictures are great. Both my boys have it memorized and read it often.

whimsical and delicious
No doubt about it. A classic that has my three year old now in love with be bop. Beautiful, whimsical paintings and delicious text! A great alternative to usual kid book drivel and TV engineered pap like authur, bernstien bears and disney stuff. Looking for children's literature. You found it.

The Message of a Master: A Classic Tale of Wealth, Wisdom, & the Secret of Success
Published in Paperback by New World Library (April, 1993)
Authors: John McDonald, Katherine Dieter, and Marc Allen
Average review score:

Fun and Motivating
I love old books brought back to life, and I really did like this one. The mysterious 'Master' is a good character, and he makes goal setting and achievement sound fun and exciting.

It seems, after reading it a few times, that a good arena for applying this method would be the stock market. The narrator's foil character, a man who was broke and sickly before meeting 'The Master', sprang to life and began working passionately toward building a fortune in the stock market after he learned the lessons.

One thing you should note, however, is the date of the first printing: 1929. Beware that this book was written at the time of maximum irrational exuberance for wealth-building.

Read it!
I've had positive changes in my life from applying "A Course in Miracles" and "The Nature of Personal Reality", but I wasn't seeing something. This book helped me to see. Remarkable in its simplicity, it distills many of the ideas in the two aforementioned books in just a few pages.

What a Book!
Some say the less said the better-This is an outstanding book. This book holds the answer to many of the things we look for in life. You will be a winner,as well as many other things after reading this book.enough said-buy it!

Deadlands: The Weird West Roleplaying Game
Published in Hardcover by Pinnacle Ent Group Inc (August, 1997)
Authors: Ron Spencer, Steve Bryant, Allen Nunis, Shane Lacy Hensley, and Allan Nunis
Average review score:

Playability of Deadlands
Deadlands provides the players a change of the usual fantasy world of Role-Playing. They can recreate events in the mid-1800s acting like cowboys and indians. They can recreate their own western movie. The Deadlands world also includes a colorful cast of creatures and its own, personlized form of history. A must for role-players with a need for a change of pace. The game does have problems. Most notibaly in the combat sequences. However, character creation is fun.

A totally innovative roleplaying system
This system is a must for roleplayers who have either become jaded with their existing system or just want to try something new. It provides a comprehensive story-line and time-line and gives the characters a whole new lease on development. The lay-out the book is easily read-able and engaging and provides the reader with an understanding of just how much is left to the players and Marshal. When I bought this book, I just had to show it to my roleplayign buddies, and they now are totally hook as I am sure you will be. If you wish to know more contact me or the Deadlands list serve. Marshal Psycho.

Deadlands: all roleplayers should try it, and like it.
After reading Deadlands, I just thought I had to share this with my players. Now, when I happen to say 'I may marshall a Deadlands next week', I just happen to have too many players.

It is the first time a Western Game has been good. And it will be hard to ever do better.

Who's Who in Hell: A Handbook and International Directory for Humanists, Freethinkers, Naturalists, Rationalists, and Non-Theists
Published in Library Binding by Barricade Books (October, 2000)
Author: Warren Allen Smith
Average review score:

Should Be In Every Library
This book should be in every reference library, private and public, as it is a useful compendium of free thinkers past and present and organizations that support them. Information on groups includes addresses and phone numbers. It also makes fascinating browsing. Celebrities and politicians past and prresent are here. George Washington and Abe Lincoln qualify. Do you? The compiler of Who's Who in Hell may be rushing things a bit as many of the listed individuals are still very much alive but I am sure the title is tongue in cheek.

MONUMENTAL DIRECTORY!
FREE INQUIRY reviewed the book negatively in an unsigned critique that purposely contained falsities. The Council for Secular Humanism's officials need to out the culprit or culprits, for the magazine now strikes me as a commercial adjunct of Prometheus Books. Otherwise, it will lose to THE HUMANIST, which for some reason has not reviewed the book. International humanist groups have far more maturity about such matters.

WHO'S WHO IN HELL uses an umbrella approach, listing from A to Z subjects of particular interest to freethinkers and including an incredible list of over 10,000 actual people from Ancient Greece to Erasmus to Voltaire to Tom Paine to the present--Christopher Reeve, Kate Hepburn, Bjork, Kurt Vonnegut Jr., etc. Freethinkers, in short, come off as being far more important than publish-or-perish professors of philosophy when it comes to influencing the media and people around the world. I put this 6-pound, 1,200+page book next to my COLUMBIA ENCYCLOPEDIA.

Indispensable Reference
This is an enormously important reference work for anyone who would like to check if a historical or contemporary figure was or is a religious believer. Most standard encyclopedias will provide whole biographies of important persons, but obscure the fact they had grave doubts about God. Many of the fathers of the American Revolution were not Christians, but deists who accepted only the existence of a prime mover not Jesus. This does not prevent foolish, uninformed believers from claiming this country was founded as a "Christian" nation.

Smith will be criticized for many of his difficult choices and assertions. The book distinguishes between major entries, real unbelievers; minor entries of persons who only wrote something related to unbelief, and peripheral entries. To assess a person's belief is always difficult. Our concepts of religion and faith are arbitrary. Different convictions may be expressed in various writings, and belief may change over time. In addition, many persons had reason to obscure their doubts or pretend to a faith they did not share. For this reason, very few modern American politicians will be found in Hell.

Readers will find some good humor, many Nobel laureates in science, literature, and peace, as well as most important philosophers and a few statesmen in Hell. Mark Twain had it truly right when he suggested we go to "Heaven for the climate, Hell for the company." No religious or secular library should be without this book.
